Point Cabrillo Light Station (California State Historic Park)

While visiting Mendocino, California, we took a quick trip up to what is currently called Cabrillo Point, a peacefully rugged headland holding the Point Cabrillo Light Station. It's also a California state historic park.

This cloudy day was still warm and dry enough to enjoy the whole day outdoors. A few sprinkles arrived, but barely. In fact, those moody skies appeared so much brighter in person due to the spectacular scenery.

We walked past the historic lightkeepers’ homes and cottages. We learned about marine life. We stood mesmerized, waiting for the brilliant light to beam from the lighthouse Fresnel lens.

It was such a simple pleasure, this long nature walk out to and back from the lighthouse. Yet, it felt like so much more—like a beautiful excursion.

But the most essential part of this experience was learning that this land belonged to the indigenous Pomo people. They are who we should remember.
