One Day in Monaco
During our month (and a half) in the south of France, we were excited about spending one day in the very small country/state of Monaco. Just a short train ride from our apartment, its beauty was undeniable.
Growing up hearing the love story of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace (and the tragedy of her death), they are who I think of when I think of Monaco. Their love story is what drew me to Monaco.
Hiking up the steep hill to the castle, following alongside the ancient fortress walls, it felt like we were taking a trek through history. It also felt quite simple, humble, and peaceful.
After reaching the top, we turned a corner and walked through this arched entry, which brought us inside the castle walls.
It truly felt like we were standing at the top of a cliff (because we were actually at the very top of a cliff, albeit with some room to roam). It also felt like we were in a small village (because we were also surrounded by a small village, on the castle grounds). Next visit, I hope we rent lodging up here.
Inside the gift shops, the Monaco Grand Prix took center stage, with beautiful images of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier tucked about.
Outside, gardens and statues stood in their honor.
Right near the Musée Océanographique.
We also walked through the trees, where meandering garden paths routed us along the cliff’s ledge.
Then, halfway down one of Monaco’s hills, we spotted Le Casino Monte-Carlo. With a security team in suits and most tourists remaining outside, we imagined the dress code was strict. I was wearing a long linen dress and a certain someone a collared shirt, so we seemed acceptable enough to enter (but, as evidenced by this photo, I’m not sure the security team was convinced). Of course, once in the lobby, my open-toed shoes prevented us from going any farther.
The signage said it all.
But we saw gifts.
Their post letter box.
Plus a magazine.
Next visit, I say we tour the stunning Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo, right across the street. (Do you think they’ll let us in?)
Monaco displayed bits of elegance everywhere.
Even in their trees.
And did I mention that we timed this visit to match up with the Monaco Yacht Show?
These views…we still cannot believe.
