Port Townsend, Washington (in July)

July was filled with more responsibilities that had us in and out of Port Townsend, Washington. Just when we thought we were about to rest, we realized we needed to go again.

Extra sunshine, a moody sky or two, and baby otter prints made me grateful. I also snuck inside beautiful architecture (with permission) to see a revitalized old hotel.

Washington’s ferry system sailed us where we needed to go, but I didn’t make reservations for the Port Townsend/Coupeville route, which meant we sometimes waited in line for hours.

Not because the ferry reservation system doesn’t work, it’s just that I grew up without required reservations, we travel on the go, and we make our decisions at the last minute.

So the requirements for when I can/cannot make reservations, pre-arrival issues, and the fees for not making a sailing are a bigger hassle for us than just arriving and waiting in line.

But our system might not work for anyone else, especially for those who need (or like) to make a ferry crossing at a certain time … when it’s busy for days. Reservations can be wise.

It was such a treat that Washington’s stunning mountains were out so much while we were in Port Townsend—the Olympics, the Cascades, Mount Baker, and Mount Rainier.

As always, we loved the local gluten-free vegan food at the Farmer’s Market, the Food Co-Op, uptown’s Aldrich’s, and Banana Leaf.

We should have seriously indulged in Owl Spirit Cafe, too! They serve the best gluten-free vegan grilled veggie sandwich, yam fries, plus other lovely menu items. Their ambiance is divine.

Live music and events were also hopping in Port Townsend (one can find them on the Discover Port Townsend, Enjoy Port Townsend, and Port Townsend Scene calendars).

July is such a beautiful month to slip into Port Townsend, Washington.
