Hiking to Sun Valley's Bald Mountain Scenic Overlook (in Ketchum, Idaho)

After spending a few years traveling and living in big cities, this summer, it was time to travel to the Sun Valley area of Idaho to slowly explore nature again. My first hike was up to the Bald Mountain Scenic Overlook, one of my favorite mountain town trail hikes in Ketchum, Idaho.

This mountain trail initially weaves hikers through the shady forest, where a few local grandparents easily passed me. (Recovering from an accident, I also needed to acclimate to the elevation.)

The base of this trail sits at about 5800’ elevation. Hiking to the Bald Mountain Scenic Overlook adds nearly another 1000’ in height (which might sound like more than the hike feels).

The second portion of this mountain switchback trail keeps hikers in the bright sunshine. I was so grateful we’d started this hike early in the morning, with long sleeves and hats. This is also where more walkers, hikers, and pups passed me. And that was okay.

I love this edge of the trail.

While on the trail, the bordering mountain towns—Ketchum and Sun Valley—feel close by in the valley below. And even with multiple walkers, joggers, and hikers, this summer trail doesn’t feel crowded to me. Essentially, we’re often alone, but people come and go. I’ll likely always feel safe hiking here (unless I spot a bear).

Rounding the corner, the Bald Mountain Scenic Overlook reveals itself. At this point, I was already genuinely missing my ultra-lightweight Italian carbon trekking poles. Now I wanted them to help me onto the old wooden platform ahead. But due to still healing my hand, I had to leave my hiking poles behind. That’s okay, too.

The cutest sign directs the way.

Success! Standing on the Bald Mountain Scenic Overlook—a rustic platform—this is the view, looking south. The Big Wood River can be seen rolling between the base of Baldy and West Ketchum, Idaho.

Looking to the north, I love the wild slope.

I remembered to look up, too.

Turning around to face west brings this glorious view. The hiking trail. And Frenchman’s area of Bald Mountain. A mountain that is so revered here.
