Gluten-Free Vegan Restaurants in Stockholm, Sweden

One of the reasons I adore Sweden is that we enjoy plenty of gluten-free vegan dining in Stockholm’s beautiful—and reasonably priced—restaurants.

In addition, Stockholm’s cafes and eateries seem to use more whole food ingredients—not processed food—to make their gluten-free vegan recipes.

Below I want to share our absolute favorite gluten-free vegan dining experiences that we wholly enjoy in Stockholm, Sweden.

Hermans

Hermans serves entirely plant-based vegan and almost entirely gluten-free food.

In fact, Hermans is where we love to experience our most special plant-based vegan dining moments in Stockholm. Because Hermans is literally like going to grandma’s house.

Hermans’ delicious buffet is so hearty that it’s the perfect place to take meat-eaters, as well. And Hermans serves beautiful drinks and desserts.

One can sit anywhere at Hermans’ house—in the dining room, out on the porch, on the deck, or lounge in the garden with a view of Stockholm and Djurgården.

We love to arrive early so we can enjoy the most affordable mealtime (usually weekday lunch), carefully filling ourselves at Hermans’ leisurely buffet.

Hermans on Google Maps

“We have chosen to serve plant-based food because it has the least harmful environmental impact and is (in our opinion) healthiest.

“Our dishes and desserts are prepared in our kitchen with care and thought. We use organic raw materials as much as possible.

“All waste is recycled, work clothes and trade clothes are made of organic cotton and bamboo, the restaurant runs on eco-labeled electricity and the company car runs on biogas.

“To Hermans come all kinds of people - regulars, tourists, vegetarians, vegans and even carnivores.

“We do not want to be seen as a small niche in the market, but as part of an ongoing conscious movement.

“We want to help people make the connection between the food we choose to eat and how it has a direct effect on our own and the planet's health.

“We want to be the BETTER ALTERNATIVE.”

Hermitage / Grön Hermitage

We love Hermitage, which is also known as Grön Hermitage, perfectly located in the heart of old town Gamla Stan.

Hermitage serves a delicious veg buffet, extra snacks, and desserts—including vegan ice cream.

Hermitage also offers takeaway, which I find a wise choice, especially if I remember to fill my takeaway containers completely full.

I always ask which dishes are vegan (most of them) and gluten-free (plenty). The rest of the food is vegetarian.

Lunch usually costs less than dinner, so we like to arrive in time to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

In fact, the earlier we arrive, the better, as crowds can appear. It helps to have one person sit and hold a table while another orders and brings the food.

We love to plant ourselves in the cozy indoor seating if we need to warm up, or the lovely outdoor seating if we need a little air.

Hermitage offers an incredible meal.

“We offer vegetarian food cooked with love in a pleasant environment in the Old Town in Stockholm.

“To this restaurant, you do best to bring your friends ... for nice conversations and a little coziness to escape the work of everyday life.

“We are constantly working to improve the planet we live on and work in the spirit of the environment. Therefore, up to 80% of our dishes are organic.”

Holy Greens

There are several Holy Greens restaurants in Stockholm. It’s the kind of place we tend to walk by while out and about, shopping, just as we find ourselves starving.

Holy Greens prioritizes sustainability, with vegan and gluten-free bowls.

Not yet entirely veg, one might never know this based on how the experience feels, once inside. There are so many veggies everywhere that you would think that’s all there is.

Holy Greens on Google Maps

“Holy Greens was born out of a desire to offer good and healthy food that takes as much consideration for our bodies as for nature, our partners and employees.

“We make all the goodies from scratch every day and spread healthy joy with our tasty, creative and filling salads that are as pleasing to the eye as to the taste buds.

“Warm welcome!”

Ikea

When we take Stockholm’s free IKEA bus to the world’s largest IKEA store, we order gluten-free vegan food from IKEA’s cafe.

IKEA serves up gluten-free vegan meatballs (buns), veggies, fruit, smoothies, and they even had raw vegan choco balls when we last visited.

IKEA is taking steps in the right direction with this, which I’m so happy to see. Especially since I grew up loving my grandma’s Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, and peas.

“We face acute climate challenges.

“A piece of this puzzle is to increase the proportion of plant-based food.

“Eating more plant-based foods is important for all of us, whether we love meat, are flexitarians, vegetarians or vegans.

“Now we welcome a new ball to the family ... as good as the meatball and extra good for the planet. It has the same good taste and texture as our IKEA meatballs, but only 4% of the climate footprint.

“This means that it is ... smarter.

“The herbal plant balls are proof of a future with less meat can be just as tasty, whether you love meat or not.

“They are made from pea protein, potatoes, onions, oats and apples and are as good and juicy as our IKEA meatballs—but without containing any meat.

“Instead, the perfect meaty taste comes from the fact that we added ... mushrooms, tomatoes and roasted vegetables.”

Kafé 44

Kafe 44, part of a co-op, is a hip underground cafe and event venue that serves an entirely vegan menu—and they have been diligent about ensuring my food was gluten-free, too.

During our first visit, we arrived on a quiet day with no events on the schedule, so we had the entire venue to ourselves.

After ordering, one can walk through the underground cafe, up the back stairs, and step into garden seating. It is so lovely.

We always drool, thinking about Kafe 44’s exquisite veggie burger with potato wedges, hearty artichoke and hummus salad, and dessert.

Kafe 44 on Google Maps

“When you ask people about kafé 44, there are slightly different answers, which is not at all strange considering that so much has happened.

“If you ask an older generation, they say: 'Ooo, 44, where I was at a theater performance or a fun party a lot of years ago.'

“If you talk to people around the age of 30 and a little younger, they say: 'Yes, I hung out there as a teenager.'

“If you talk to today's young people, they say: 'Yes, they have very good veggie jaws and they have the Internet.’”

Legumes

Legumes, a restaurant near and dear to our hearts, serves homemade veggie dishes influenced by India and the Mediterranean.

Legumes also serves one of the most affordable lunches around, with a genuinely local crowd.

Their buffet is mostly vegan and gluten-free, even though it’s marketed as vegetarian.

When ordering, we let them know that we’d love to have all of their gluten-free vegan items in the buffet, and they know precisely which items to spoon onto our plates.

When we order take-away, we essentially receive enough food for two meals.

We are so grateful for Legumes.

“The master chef himself is of Indian origin and has been involved from the very beginning … he always makes sure that all the good food served is homemade.

“Our ingredients are always fresh ... we put all the focus on our diners and the most important thing for us is that they are satisfied after each visit.”

Mahalo

Mahalo serves up entirely plant-based food, with plenty of it gluten-free—including all their cakes. Their food is gorgeous and delicious.

And you would never know by looking at all its earthiness, just how incredibly sweet and savory it tastes.

When ordering take-away, I like the idea of placing a double order so I can enjoy it again the next day.

Such a delight, popping in to enjoy Mahalo’s local plant-based vegan scene.

Mahalo on Google Maps

“We started in 2015 with a passion to cook, eat and offer plant-based food.

“Being creative, working with good ingredients and discovering new exciting flavors is something that is close to our hearts.

“All our food is made with a lot of love for the environment, the animals and for our wonderful guests.

“We are a vegan café and work mainly with organic ingredients and are happy to choose products from smaller and local companies.

“Our cafés are located at Hornsgatan 61 in Södermalm and Odengatan 26 in Vasastan. Four-legged friends are warmly welcome!”

Naturbageriet SATTVA

Naturbageriet SATTVA is where we would go for hearty and delicious hand-crafted snacks that were sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan.

We especially loved their gluten-free vegan banana and zucchini bread, sold by the thick slice—a meal in itself. Naturbageriet also offered rolls, muffins, balls, beverages, and more.

We found Naturbageriet SATTVA the perfect place to buy hearty sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan treats to toss into our bag, to snack on, while we walked our day away.

And, if we were lucky, the sweetest man greeted us with the kindest love.

Sadly, Naturbageriet SATTVA sold. Then it permanently closed. I just can’t bear to delete these lovely experiences that we treasured with the original owners.

“We are small independent organic bakery.

“We stongly believe in sentient vegetarian diet ... all of our products are vegetarian, some are even completely vegan and gluten-free!

“Everything is hand-made and baked with love and affection.

“We even use organic (ecological) cinnamon and sugar in our products.

“To complement you fika (that's the snappy Swedish word for small coffee-break with pastries) you can order different varieties of organic, fair-traded coffee or juice.

“We don't have much space for sitting, but during summer you can enjoy sunshine and fresh air in the middle of Old Town of Stockholm in our outdoor terrace.”

Organico

Organico serves organic gluten-free vegan food, plus it’s a little market.

Organico looks and feels just like a favorite earthy coffee shop, but with plant-based food.

My freshly made gluten-free vegan wrap was spilling over, delicious, and oh-so-filling.

Organico is the perfect spot for cozying into a quiet corner window seat. One can also sit outside for sidewalk dining.

Organico on Google Maps

“Our focus is on food, because we believe that food should be our medicine!

“But here you will also find a carefully selected range of organic skin care, supplements and herbs.

“We are extremely picky about quality - only the best is good enough.

“We have a walk-in fridge with a large selection of fruits and vegetables and also beans, rice, nuts, seeds and dried fruit in bulk.”

The Green Queen

Located halfway around Lake Mälaren is The Green Queen.

Ever since the first time we passed its sidewalk deli board, which announced “plant-based” food, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

So when my boyfriend surprised me with a walk around Lake Mälaren, I knew where we would eat lunch.

The Green Queen’s plant-based vegan menu is mostly organic, gluten-free, and free of refined sugar. And it’s delicious.

On top of that, the decor is beautiful, with fresh flowers in vases while dining inside or out.

The Green Queen on Google Maps

“In our restaurant, you can enjoy the greener alternative with plant-based street food, burgers, wines, quesadillas, gluten-free beers, kebabs, green smoothies, power shots and vegan snacks.

“The food and drink we serve is mostly organic and, as we call it, ‘CLEAN’, ie free of gluten, lactose and refined sugar.

“With us it is about being able to sin with a good conscience…”
